My mosaic colleague, Luz Mack and I are working with amazing artists, volunteers, and the community — as well as the awesome students at Burbank Elementary School — to create this beautiful rainbow for their school campus. Every student put down several pieces, and the community is finishing it up.

It took almost a year to complete this project. I was having such a great time with the central figure, but when it got to the background, I was stumped. I let it languish about the studio for a while until a few key conversations with two artists I respect and admire (Luz Mack and Kelley Knickerbocker) suggested a matte tile with colorful thinset in the background. I plan to do a few more of these, based on drawings I made during the pandemic. Happy New Year, everyone!
